Palliative Care – What is it?
The goal of palliative care is to improve quality of life for both the patient and the family through specialized medical care. This specialized care focuses on providing patients with relief from the symptoms and stress of a serious illness. Palliative care is provided by a specially-trained team of doctors, nurses and other specialists who work together with a patient’s previous doctors to provide an extra layer of support.
Other than providing hospice care, Esteem Healthcare also provides a palliative care program through Esteem House Calls. Unlike hospice care, which requires that patients meet certain criteria, palliative care administered through Esteem House Calls can serve anyone. It is appropriate for patients of any age, at any stage in a serious illness and can be provided along with curative treatment. Palliative care is treated in the same way as medical services (e.g. cardiology) in that most insurance plans, including Medicare and Medicaid, cover all or part of your palliative care visits.
